Books on the Move

Taipei residents can now borrow books on the go. In December 2012, a fleet of 62 buses on routes 1, R32, and 205 started running as part of the city's public bus library. However, it is not stopping there because the government plans on expanding its movable library. The goal is to place bookshelves on more buses, in MRT stations, on MRT trains, and at locations around public transportation sites. All this is being done to encourage reading. Since the program's launch, the books, most of which have been donated, have been borrowed over 10,000 times. Now you can hit the road and the books at the same time.

台北居民如今能在搭乘交通工具時借閱書籍。2012年十二月，一路、紅三十二以及二零五等三線共六十二輛公車，開始以市立公車圖書館的身分上路行駛。不過計劃並非就此打住，政府仍打算擴大這項行動圖書館的服務。目標是要在更多公車中、捷運車站和車廂裡，以及大眾運輸系統周圍的地點上放置書籍借閱架。上述所有措施都是為了鼓勵閱讀而開辦。自從本項計劃開始後，這些大多都是靠捐贈而來的書籍被借閱超過一萬次。如今，您可以一邊上路，同時一邊沈浸書香。

Lucy and Nick are getting some pointers about India from their tour guide, Ted.

T: I need to make all of you aware of a few things before we start exploring this part of India.
N: That sounds serious. Will we end up in jail because of them?
T: No, but you may seriously offend someone.
L: I don't think any of us want to do that.
T: First, don't give or accept anything with your left hand.
L: Why not?
T: It's considered dirty and rude. Next, for all you married couples, please do not hug, hold hands, or kiss in public.
N: Really? What's wrong with showing my wife some affection?
T: In this culture, men only socialize with men, and men should never touch women in public.

One Woman’s Brutal Death Sparks Anger across India

On the eve of December 16, 2012, a 23-year-old college student named Jyoti Singh had just finished watching a movie with a male friend of hers in Delhi, India. Since it was late and they needed to get home, they hopped on what they thought was a regular commuter bus. Sadly, they were wrong because that fateful ride led to the brutal rape of Singh by six attackers.
Both Singh and her friend, who was also physically beaten, were thrown out of the bus and left to die on the side of the road. Singh’s injuries were so severe that she died in a hospital 13 days later. This event has since sent shock waves and resulted in protests about the mistreatment of women in India throughout the country and around the world.

2012年十二月十六日晚間，印度新德里一位名叫喬蒂．辛赫的女大生與男性友人剛看完一場電影。由於當時天色已晚、兩人必須趕緊回家，因此便搭上一台他們認為是一般通勤巴士的車輛。他們不幸誤認錯了，因為這趟萬劫不復的巴士之行結果竟是辛赫遭到六名攻擊者慘絕人寰的輪暴。
辛赫的友人也慘遭毒打，最後兩人都被丟至車外，遺棄在路邊任憑死活。十三天後，辛赫卻不幸在醫院傷重不治。自發生後，這起事件不但餘波盪漾，同時也在印度全國及世界各地引發了各種抗議印度女性遭受不當對待的示威活動。

Attracting Customers at a Trade Show

Kevin is attending a trade show as an exhibitor. He is speaking to a woman who has just stopped by his booth.

When most people think of physical fitness, they think of hitting the gym. In reality, physical fitness is better defined in two separate categories. The first and most important is a person's state of health and well-being. In other words, it is not just about how much weight you can lift. Instead, it is more about how healthy your body is. A balanced diet, frequent exercise, and proper rest will enable you to perform daily tasks better. In addition, it will help boost your body's immune system when combating diseases.

Hunting for a New Place

Rob is seeking advice from his friend Ellen.
R: Rob　　E: Ellen
R: Can I ask you a favor, Ellen?
E: Sure. What can I do for you?
R: My mom asked me to move out. She wants to turn my room into her own personal yoga studio.
E: That's too bad. What are you going to do?
R: I need to find a place of my own.
E: What kind of space are you looking for?
R: I'd like a one-bedroom, rooftop apartment with a view. Hopefully, it'll be located near an MRT station. Oh, and it has to be under NT$5,000 a month.
